Finnish design house Marimekko opened a new store in Kuala Lumpur on 21 April 2025. Located at the prestigious Pavilion shopping center, the new dynamic store marks the 4th Marimekko store in Malaysia. The Marimekko store in Pavilion is the first store in the Southeast Asia region to feature Marimekko's innovative modular store concept.
The visual identity of Marimekko’s updated store concept reflects the brand's bright and imaginative lifestyle ethos with its modular and immersive layout. The store interior draws inspiration from elements of Marimekko’s own textile printing factory in Helsinki, Finland, providing an ideal setting for showcasing the brand's striking and colourful design, ranging from ready-to-wear, bags, accessories and home products.
“The new experiential retail concept is quintessentially a reflection of Marimekko’s design thinking, inviting participation and engagement through experience and bold yet functional design elements. With this new store, our aim is to inspire both new and existing customers with engaging visual activations and events taking place throughout the year. We are excited to continue our chapter in Malaysia with our updated and modern take on the joyful Marimekko lifestyle brand that reflects our rich design heritage through a fresh lens”, says Natacha Defrance, Senior Vice President, Sales, Region East at Marimekko.
The new store has been designed with long-lasting materials, such as timber and metal, that are either recyclable or reusable and locally sourced. Key elements of the new store design include signature wooden wall grids, industrial references, and metal ceiling bars, from which bold and colorful Marimekko fabrics and timeless dress silhouettes will be displayed in seasonal themes and colour palettes, bringing a sense of joy to everyday living.
Field of Flowers pop-up exhibition lands in Kuala Lumpur
In conjunction with the new store opening, Marimekko also hosted a pop-up exhibition at Pavilion, entitled Field of Flowers featuring new floral print design by five contemporary artists: Erja Hirvi, Masaru Suzuki, Aino-Maija Metsola, Antti Kekki and Eija Vehviläinen.
The conceptual exhibition showcases fabric installations, and the new artworks will be available to purchase in exclusive limited-edition Marimekko products.
These products available for a limited time only, include a selection of tote bags, coin and utility purses, cushion covers and collectible posters and postcards.
The pop-up exhibition was held from 22nd April until 27th April 2025 at Pavilion Centre Court, Level 2 in the Pavilion mall.
“We are excited to continue building our artistic legacy with the Field of Flowers pop-up exhibition, which presents 25 new artworks by five new generation print designers. Each artist has used their unique imprint and signature technique to capture Marimekko’s optimistic and joyful essence. At Marimekko, floral patterns symbolize unrestrained joy and timeless beauty – florals have become unmistakable motifs in Marimekko’s art of printmaking and a source of inspiration for a new generation of designers. During 2024, Marimekko celebrated the 60th anniversary of its most globally recognized floral print Unikko with engaging visual activations and special product launches throughout the entire year. Now for the year 2025, we highlight an entire bouquet of florals in all shapes and sizes”, continues Defrance.
