I recently attended the What Women Want Forum: Before We Bloom - A Couple's Guide to Pre-Pregnancy, organised by Parenthood Media together with Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL) at MyToday, Atria Shopping Gallery.
The forum brought together an open discussion on trying to conceive (TTC), fertility, hormonal health and preparing for pregnancy plus the importance of seeking the right medical guidance early.
One thing that really stood out to me was that pre-pregnancy health starts much earlier than many of us realise. It's not only about seeking help when you're ready to conceive. Understanding your overall health, hormones, lifestyle and any underlying conditions can be an important part of being better prepared.
Dr Raymond Lim, Obstetrics & Gynaecology (O&G) and Dr Lim Sue Wen, Endocrinologist, from Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur shared insights on how factors such as age, hormonal health, weight, nutrition, physical activity and underlying medical conditions can influence fertility.
Did you know that fertility is a couple's journey? If conception takes longer than expected, both partners may need to be assessed, as male factors can also play a role.
Another myth they addressed? Seeing a fertility specialist doesn't automatically mean IVF. A consultation is first about understanding what may be affecting fertility and exploring the options that are appropriate for each individual or couple, from lifestyle changes and medication to managing underlying conditions or assisted reproductive treatments when needed.
The specialists, Dr Raymond Lim and Dr Lim Sue Wen, also discussed how fertility changes with age, while health conditions such as polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS), endometriosis, thyroid disorders and diabetes may make conception more challenging.
Recognising possible warning signs and seeking medical advice early can help women better understand their reproductive health and what steps may be appropriate for them.
By addressing these topics openly, the forum aimed to make trying to conceive (TTC) conversations feel more informed, practical and less overwhelming.
Through What Women Want Forum: Before We Bloom, Parenthood Media and Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur aimed to encourage more open conversations around trying to conceive (TTC) and pre-pregnancy health, helping women better understand the factors that can influence fertility and the options available to them.
